Similar to many popular online streaming services, you will now have the option to create up to five profiles under a single library card for a more personalized experience based on age. For example, teen profiles display only young adult or children’s materials, and kid profiles only display children’s materials. A main Profile must exist, but extra Profiles are completely optional and can be added or deleted at any time.
- You can have up to five profiles per library card number, either general (adult), teen or kid, and the profiles will share the loan and hold limits of the one card number.
- Each profile can be customized to the individual based on age and reading interests.
- This feature is perfect for guardians sharing their account with children or for those who want to maintain different reading profiles.
- If you will be the only one using Boundless on your device, you can delete all the profiles except the one you want to use.
- Use "Manage Profiles" to change current settings such as profile image, email notifications, checkout history, reading interests, and more! A display name is required for each profile, while an email address, avatar and profile PIN are optional.
- Each profile allows you to select reading interests and will suggest reading recommendations based on your choices.
If you see one of these errors, it could mean the EPUB or PDF format was mistakenly selected when you checked out an e-book in your main library account. If you want to read the title in the Boundless app or in a browser, you will need to return it and check it out again, this time selecting "Boundless eBook."
Use the Boundless app to return the title, unless the title does not appear in the app. In that case, you will need to log into your Boundless account using a browser. Click on the top left menu, then click Checkouts. Look for More Options next to the title, or select the three dots, then Return. Then search and check the title out again. If the title has a waitlist, please contact us for help with returning the title without losing your place in line.
- The "Boundless eBook" format is needed to read e-books with the Boundless app on a smartphone or tablet, and in a browser. All Boundless e-books should be available in this format.
- The "Adobe EPUB" or "EPUB" format is needed if you are transferring the e-book to an e-reader. Most Boundless e-books are available in this format.
- The "Adobe PDF" or "PDF" format indicates the e-book will display in fixed layout in the app and on an e-reader. The book will appear like an exact copy of the print book, and the text is not resizable. A handful of Boundless titles are available in PDF format because of the desire to preserve the original layout of the book, such as with picture books.

Because of this, when you have a question about a certain title, access the collection directly to verify its availability. Use the mobile app for each collection, or use these direct links via a browser:
-
- Boundless
- Flipster
- Hoopla (you must be logged into your account to see the content available to us)
- Kanopy
- OverDrive (Classic)
- Libby, by OverDrive
Please let us know if we can help you find alternatives, or use our Suggest a Purchase form and we will explore purchase possibilities.
You might need to enter a Display Name and an answer to the Security Question before you are able to save any other changes you want to make to your Profile Settings.
The Axis 360 app and website were transitioned on September 26, 2023 to a new digital platform called Boundless.
The audiobook providers we use do not provide supplemental PDF content, unfortunately. Often the content can be found in the e-book version of the same title.
If the title you are trying to access when you see this error does not have holds, return the title, then Sign Out of your account and close the app. Open the app, sign in and check the title out again. If this doesn't help, or if the title in question has holds, contact Boundless tech support and ask for a device limit reset.

In addition to each person having a lending limit of 10 titles per month, we also have a daily, system-wide budget limit. Hoopla's lending model is pay-per-use, so we divide our annual budget into 365 days to spread it out. When all JCPL patrons using Hoopla collectively reach that daily limit, you will see this error message and will not be able to borrow until the daily reset at midnight. The best way to avoid this is by using Hoopla as early in the morning as possible. We apologize for this inconvenience.

- If Hoopla says, “Sorry, but our lending policy does not allow you to register for Hoopla/borrow this title," it means your card is not a Jefferson County resident card. Only Jefferson County Residents can use Hoopla. If you have moved into Jefferson County since you got your library card, please contact us for assistance.
Starting in March 2024, Bonus Borrows will be active monthly. For the last seven days of each calendar month, a selection of titles will be available for you to enjoy without using your monthly Hoopla credits.
The Hoopla collection comes to us "as is," meaning we do not select individual titles or have any control. In addition, content frequently comes and goes in the Hoopla collection, for various reasons. You can check for missing titles in our Libby (e-books only) or Boundless collections (e-books and audiobooks), or submit a purchase request.
The audiobook providers we use do not provide supplemental PDF content, unfortunately. Often the content can be found in the e-book version of the same title.

Installing Libby
Option 1: Download the Libby App from the App Store
The Libby app should be available in the Kindle Fire app store. If you see it after searching for "Libby," install it, and open it. Then, follow prompts to find Jefferson County Public Library, and enter your library card number.
Option 2: Download the Libby App Directly
If you do not see Libby in the search results after searching in the app store, follow these instructions for directly downloading the app:
- In the Silk browser, go to https://help.libbyapp.com/en-us/6279.htm?Highlight=APK, opens a new window
- Tap the button that says "Download Libby APK."
- Tap OK, Allow, or Continue to proceed.

After you finish installing the Libby app, turn this setting back to off, under your device home screen Settings, then Privacy & Security.

- Tap Install in the bottom right corner, if prompted.
- Once the file downloads, or the screen says App Installed, tap Open in the bottom right corner.
- If you have never used Libby, follow prompts to find Jefferson County Public Library, and enter your library card number. (Search For A Library)
- If you already use Libby on another device, you can use a setup code to copy your library cards, loans, holds, and tags to your Kindle Fire tablet. (Copy From Another Device)
Option 3: Use OverDrive or Libby via the Silk browser
If you do not see Libby in the app store, and the direct download will not work, follow these instructions for using OverDrive.com or Libbyapp.com in the Silk browser. OverDrive is the name of the company and the name of their original app. Libby is the name of their current app. The classic OverDrive app was retired in April 2023.
The Libby app can be found in the app store on iOS and Android devices. The Libby app might need to be directly downloaded onto Kindle Fires instead of installed from the app store. Learn how to download the Libby app directly to your Kindle Fire.
You can also use the Libby app to send a Kindle e-book to your Kindle e-reader.
You can suspend or pause a hold if you want to prevent it from becoming available for checkout. The title will remain in your hold queue, and you will continue to advance in line, but it will not be available to check out until you unsuspend it.
Boundless:
- In your Hold list (online or in the Boundless app), tap the three dots under the book title, then select Suspend Hold. When you are ready to unsuspend the hold, select Activate Hold.
- It is not currently possible to suspend or activate Boundless holds in your main library account.
Libby, by OverDrive:
- In your Hold list (in your Libby account, or in the Libby app), select Suspend Hold and choose a time period. When you are ready to unsuspend the hold, select Edit Hold, and Remove Suspension.
- In your main library account, click Pause next to the title. When you are ready to unsuspend the hold, click Resume.

We update our main catalog with e-content title additions and deletions on a regular basis, but there will be discrepancies in between those updates.
When you are in the Libby app or on the Libby app website, select the menu icon at the bottom center, then select Settings, and then Manage Notifications. From that screen, there are different events listed (loan expiring, hold ready, etc.) and the option to ignore each, or receive an email notice or menu badge. Check or uncheck circles in each column, as desired.

Publisher Restrictions
Unfortunately, not all of an author’s titles are available as an e-book or downloadable audiobook.
E-book and downloadable audiobook pricing for libraries is very different, often much higher, than what you might pay from a retail store. On average, we pay more than $50 per copy, sometimes making it cost prohibitive to buy dozens of copies of one item.
OverDrive (Libby) is the exclusive provider of Kindle-compatible e-books to public libraries in the US. That means that most e-book titles in our Libby collection are compatible with Kindle e-readers, but e-book titles in our Boundless and Hoopla collections are not compatible. Note that not all titles are made available in the Kindle format, and sometimes the release of the Kindle format is delayed.
Unfortunately, the vendor platforms through which you get your e-books or downloadable audiobooks do not support automatic renewals.
There are some titles that publishers do not allow libraries to buy. While we may be able to get certain titles in print or on disc, the e-book or downloadable audiobook formats may not be available. Some of these popular titles may only be available for people to purchase and not available for sale to libraries. Paid services, like Audible™, have exclusive agreements with authors and publishers that prevent sales to libraries.
Most publishers let libraries lease e-books and downloadable audiobooks for either two-year terms or 26 checkouts. Once these terms are met, libraries must repurchase the titles. This is why you may see titles with no copies available as we work to repurchase items.
