On June 18, 2026, Jefferson County Public Library’s (JCPL) future location in northwest Jeffco was named Coal Creek Library by the Board of Trustees. Taking inspiration from the nearby Coal Creek Study Area, opens a new window and Highway 72, also known as Coal Creek Canyon Drive, the name evokes a sense of place and regional identity.
The new name was selected from a larger list that was narrowed down to four options, then voted on by JCPL staff and community members through an online survey. Of the 585 responses received, Coal Creek Library was the overwhelming winner, receiving 46% of the vote. Supporters noted ties to Jefferson County’s mining heritage and sense of regional identity it carries. In addition to the geographic ties, the new name meets JCPL brand standards and fits current naming conventions for other library locations.
From the name of the location to the design of physical spaces to the services provided, JCPL conducts thorough community engagement so each library in our system reflects the local community and its unique needs.
