The first time you meet Oliver, you'll be shocked to learn he is only in the seventh grade. His calm, focused demeanor and dry wit could easily fool you into thinking he is much older than his 13 years.
Oliver joined the JCPL volunteer team last year for Summer Challenge and has quickly proven his dedication to giving back to his community, serving over 100 hours in just the past six months!
Emily, teen librarian at Golden Library, reflects on Oliver's time as a volunteer, "Oliver has become a standout ambassador for the Library and Teen Advisory Board (TAB). He offers his time in many areas: from planning teen programs for local youth to enjoy and working quietly behind the scenes in Operations to promoting library services during Summer Challenge and inviting new members to TAB. He loves being here, and the Library loves having him!"
Why does he do it?
Oliver's favorite things about volunteering are meeting new people, supporting the community and, of course, all the good times he has with the librarians.
"Oliver believes chocolate makes each task more enjoyable," says Joyce, PX associate at Golden Library. "And he knows that I keep a stash just for this purpose. It's a win-win!"
Oliver keeps busy during the school year practicing upright bass, which he's played in his school orchestra for the past two-and-a-half years. His favorite subject is social studies — though he admits he is already looking forward to high school, as some things about middle school are already starting to feel repetitive.
In his free time, Oliver spends plenty of time outdoors. Born and raised in Colorado, he is an avid hiker and has summited thirteen 14ers. His top three favorites are Handies Peak, Mount Massive and Mount Antero. When he's not at high altitude, he is often found mountain biking around Table Mountain.
Oliver's taste in books and movies trends towards the dark and serious. His top five movies (in no particular order) are "The Shawshank Redemption," "Schindler's List," "Donnie Darko," "Fight Club" and "The Godfather." He is a horror/suspense fan and says he's addicted to anything written by Stephen King or Thomas Harris.
Oliver encourages other teens to consider volunteering at JCPL, saying, "It is a great opportunity to be a part of the community, it helps with your resume and you have a lot of fun doing it."
Thanks, Oliver!!
