Get free tax help from AARP IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax counseling and preparation services to millions of taxpayers with special attention to elderly and low- to moderate-income taxpayers.
These free tax counseling appointments are available between Feb. 2 – April 6, and registration is required. After you register, it is important that you complete an Intake Form prior to your appointment. You can either download and print your own copy or visit select locations to pick up a printed copy once they are available.
AARP asks that you use the following checklist as a reminder of the items you need to bring to your appointment.
Bring to ALL appointments:
- A filled-out Intake Form (English or Spanish). Print from home or pick one up at select JCPL locations.
- Previous year's tax return(s).
- All 2025 tax documents (W2, 1099, etc.)
- Affordable Care Act Form 1095A (if you bought health insurance through healthcare.gov or a state exchange such as Connect for Health Colorado).
- Social Security cards and/or ITIN notices/cards for yourself and any dependents. We cannot accept memorized SS numbers or SS numbers from prior returns.
- Photo ID for each taxpayer.
- A check or a copy of a check (not a deposit slip) for the bank account you intend to use for direct deposit for refund(s). Numbers from debit cards won't work.
- Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) (for each individual if applicable).
- Seniors who applied for Colorado State Property Tax Credit rebates (104PTC), please bring proof of any property tax you paid directly in 2025, rent receipts for 2025, heating costs for 2025 and a Colorado Driver's License or CO photo ID card.
AARP would also like to remind you that they are unable to assist with the following tax returns:
- Returns for other states (but they can prepare part-year CO returns).
- Returns involving rental income, except for land (i.e., farmland) or incidental use of your main home (15 days or fewer during the year).
- Returns for small businesses that had employees, contract help, depreciation, home office expenses or inventory.
- Returns for someone who owned any virtual currency in 2025, even if none was bought or sold in 2025.
- Returns involving a casualty loss, anyone who experienced bankruptcy during 2025 or anyone in the military or active reserve during 2025.
- Returns involving tax credits for the purchase of electric, hybrid or fuel cell vehicles.
- Returns involving credits for installation of solar panels, heat pumps and other clean energy property.
