Getting Started: Libby/OverDrive E-books on Kindle E-reader

Step-by-step instructions: (Printable version)

Option 1: On Your Computer with Libbyapp.com

(This is the preferred method for new users without a mobile device.)

  1. Using your computer, go to libbyapp.com.
  2. Use the magnifying glass icon to search, or use the building icon to browse featured titles and categories.
  3. Click on a title's cover, click Borrow near the cover, then click Borrow again.
  4. Click Go to Shelf. (To get to Shelf otherwise, tap the stacked books icon, then loans.)
  5. Click "Read With...." next to the title's cover.
  6. Click Kindle. You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete your checkout. Sign in to your Amazon account when prompted.
  7. Click Get Library Book.
  8. Choose your Kindle device in the "Deliver to:" drop down menu and click Continue.
  9. If your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, the e-book will download wirelessly to your Kindle home screen. (The option to download and transfer via USB was removed by Amazon in February 2025. Kindle Generation 1, Generation 2 and Kindle DX do not have wi-fi capability, and it is no longer possible to transfer Libby e-books to them.)
Option 2: With the Libby App on Your Mobile Device

(This is the preferred method for new users with a mobile device.)

  1. Use the magnifying glass icon to search, or use the building icon to browse featured titles and categories.
  2. Tap on a title's cover, tap Borrow near the cover, then tap Borrow again.
  3. Tap Go to Shelf. (To get to Shelf otherwise, tap the stacked books icon, then loans.)
  4. Tap "Read With...." next to the title's cover.
  5. Tap Kindle. You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete your checkout. Sign in to your Amazon account when prompted.
  6. Tap Get Library Book.
  7. Choose your Kindle device in the "Deliver to:" drop down menu and click Continue.
  8. If your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, the e-book will download wirelessly to your Kindle home screen. (The option to download and transfer via USB was removed by Amazon in February 2025. Kindle Generation 1, Generation 2 and Kindle DX do not have wi-fi capability, and it is no longer possible to transfer Libby e-books to them.)
Option 3: On Your Computer with OverDrive.com

(This is the preferred method for long-time users already accustomed to using OverDrive.com.)

  1. Using your computer, go to jefferson.overdrive.com
  2. Search or browse for books and use the e-books filter to find an e-book that is available in the Kindle Book format (or, look at the "Available formats" on each title's details page).
  3. Click the cover of a title, click Borrow, then enter your library card number.
  4. Click My Account, and then Loans. Next to the title, click Read now with Kindle. You'll be taken to Amazon's website to complete your checkout. Sign in to your Amazon account when prompted.
  5. Click Get Library Book.
  6. Choose your Kindle device in the "Deliver to:" drop down menu and click Continue.
  7. If your Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, the e-book will download wirelessly to your Kindle home screen. (The option to download and transfer via USB was removed by Amazon in February 2025. Kindle Generation 1, Generation 2 and Kindle DX do not have wi-fi capability, and it is no longer possible to transfer Libby e-books to them.)

More Information:

  • You may check out up to 99 titles at a time, and have 70 items on hold.
  • When a hold is ready, you have 3 days to borrow it, delay it, or cancel it.
    • To borrow it, click Borrow near the cover, and then Borrow again.
    • To deliver the hold later, click Deliver Later and choose a new delivery date.
    • To cancel the hold, select Manage Hold, then Cancel Hold.
    • If you do nothing, your hold will be automatically scheduled for later delivery one time.
  • Early return: Sign in to your Amazon account, and go to Content & Devices. Find the book you wish to return and under Actions, click Return this Book. Delete will not return the book to the library.
  • If a title does not have holds, you can renew it within three days of its due date. To renew a title, find the title in your loans in your Libby or OverDrive account, then Manage Loan. Select Renew Loan, then Renew.
