(Lakewood, Colo. - March 8, 2013) Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) announced today that voting has begun for the 2013 One Book 1 Golden program. Patrons can select from three titles, all written by Colorado authors. The winning selection will be announced in April, with related programming and an author visit planned for the fall.
"Bringing the community together and being a catalyst for conversation is one of the Library’s key roles," said Pam Nissler, executive director, JCPL. "We started this program last year to promote a culture of reading and create a shared reading experience. We had tremendous interest in the program and were very pleased with the community reaction."
"After the success of last year’s One Book 1 Golden program, we were eager to begin planning for 2013," said Golden Library Manager Peg Hooper. "I will be anxious to see which book receives the most votes – it’s going be a tough choice."
Patrons may vote on the following titles through March 25 at http://jeffcolibrary.org/onebookonegolden/OBOG_voting_form.html
East of Denver by Gregory Hill
Arriving at his family's farm in Eastern Colorado, Shakespeare Williams discovers both his father and the family farm are in a terrible state. As he works to better the situation, he falls in with an unlikely clique of former classmates in a haphazard plot to rob the bank that has taken advantage of his father’s dementia. Their plans proceed to go downhill.
Benediction by Kent Haruf
Set in Holt, Colorado, the setting for Plainsong and Eventide, Haruf’s latest book introduces a new cast of characters. Dad Lewis is dying and old friends come to say their farewells, their prayers, and their good wishes. His wife and daughter work to make his final days as comfortable as possible, knowing all is tainted by the heart-break of an absent son. Next door, a little girl moves in with her grandmother and is drawn into the circle of friendship; her innocence and youth provide promise and hope to all those around her. Another arrival in town, the new minister, attempts to mend strained relationships of his own, as he faces up to his latest congregation.
The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
Surviving a pandemic disease that has killed everyone he knows, a pilot establishes a shelter in an abandoned airport hangar and spends his days flying out and back over what was once Colorado. When he hears a random radio transmission, he decides to fly out past the point of no return to seek out other survivors.
One Book 1 Golden is presented in partnership with the Golden Civic Foundation.
