Benediction by Kent Haruf selected by Golden residents

(Lakewood, Colo. – Sept. 6, 2013) Earlier this year, Golden residents selected Benediction by Kent Haruf for its 2013 One Book. 1 Golden. program. Beginning Sept. 17, the Golden Library will present two weeks of events related to the book selection.

Book Discussion Tuesday
6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17
Golden Library, 1019 10th St.
Join other readers for a lively discussion of Benediction.

“Turning the Other Cheek” Panel Discussion
6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24
Golden Community Center, 1470 10th St.
In Chapter 25 of Benediction, Reverend Lyle preaches a controversial message based on the Sermon on the Mount, a message that enrages some members of his congregation, many of whom have family members serving in the military, and ultimately leads to his dismissal. Join us as leaders from the local faith community hold a panel discussion on the idea of “turning the other cheek,” its relevance in today’s world, and its interpretation in various religious faiths and the teachings of Gandhi and Martin Luther King. Is there such a thing as a “just” war?  Is violence warranted as revenge? A Q&A will follow the panel discussion. Free tickets are required and available at

“Picture Golden” Photo Contest
The imaginary small town of Holt, Colo. is the setting for Benediction. Like any small town there are things that distinguish it from other towns. What is it about Golden that sets it apart, makes it unique? What says “Golden” to you? Take a photograph and enter it in our “Picture Golden” photo contest. The submission deadline is Sept. 21 and winners will be announced at a reception in the Golden Library on Sept. 29. Additional details at
