Jefferson County Public Library celebrates 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) celebrates young readers this September and October. Discover the fun at special 1000 Books Before Kindergarten parties and events held at all 10 Jefferson County libraries. From finishers of the program to those just ready to start, all are invited to attend.

During the events, children sing, dance and play along to interactive and informative performances from the Hunk-Ta-Bunk-Ta Show, Super Stolie’s Music Show or ¡Super Stolie Guacamole! Show. Each location offers additional crafts, snacks and activities for added education and entertainment.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide challenge for caregivers to read 1000 books with their child to kick start early learning before the start of formal schooling. This fall’s line up commemorates the 1,861 (and counting) participants of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. Since December 2017, these young readers have logged 220,522 books, 87 have graduated from the program and 191 have reached the halfway, 500th-book milestone. JCPL is committed to helping these little brains develop and raising readers by making early literacy as easy, fun and accessible as possible.

"Learning to read begins at birth. One of the best ways to raise a reader is to share books together at home," said Robyn Lupa, kids and families coordinator for the Library. "Our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages exploring and talking about books -- and get prizes and motivation while doing so."
