Jefferson County Public Library brings New York Times Bestselling Authors to Colorado for Romance in the Rockies

Fans of romance and women’s fiction are in for a night of romantic indulgence January 25, 2020 when Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) brings New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr to Colorado.

Carr is the bestselling author of over 40 novels, opens a new window, which have sold more than 28 million copies. Her 20-volume Virgin River series alone has netted more than 13 million copies and Netflix is adapting for television with a 10-episode series, premiering later this year. She headlines Romance in the Rockies, which will be held at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.

The billion-dollar romance book industry no longer features stories just about boy meets girl. Today’s romance stories feature several sub-genres that keep loyal fans reading, including historical, comedy, suspense, mystery, inspirational, LGBTQ, fantasy, crime and more. Romance in the Rockies celebrates the diverse voices of romance with an award-winning panel of local Colorado romance authors who precede the main stage event.

Authors include:

“Romance and women’s fiction represent about 20 percent of our total circulation,” said Donna Walker, JCPL’s executive director. “We can’t wait to lift the veil on romance and its subgenres with its fans from Jefferson County as we discuss and celebrate romance in the Rockies.”

Romance in the Rockies capitalizes on the popularity of the romance genre, especially among women. A 2017 study commissioned by the Romance Writers of America (The Romance Book Buyer 2017: A Study by NPD Book for Romance Writers of America) shows today’s romance reader is mainly female (82%), but men make up 18% of the market. They are also technologically savvy, with tablets and smartphones being the most-used devices to read e-books. Half of romance readers read romantic suspense, followed by erotic and historical as the most popular genres, and younger readers read more young adult, erotic, and paranormal romance and less contemporary romance than older readers.

Eleven of Robyn’s books have reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, collectively spending 250 weeks on the list since A Virgin River made its debut there in 2008. In 2016, Romance Writers of America recognized Robyn with the Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award.

Registration for the event opens Thursday, December 26. Tickets are free but required for entrance. For more information, visit jeffcolibrary.org/romance, opens a new window.
