Introducing Life – The Short Course

Saturdays, May - June at Columbine Library

What do buying a house, making good investments, and learning how to change a flat have in common?

According to experts, they’re just some of the skills needed to win the game of life. And Jefferson County Public Library is here to help teens and young adults do just that.

Life – The Short Course is Columbine Library’s new series that assists younger generations in navigating the oft-complex transition from dependence to independence.

The series connects participants with experts in the fields of banking, realty, and even bicycle maintenance and repair. Attendees have the opportunity to ask questions, workshop their knowledge of “adult” skills, and network with a community of peers going through similar life changes.

Life - The Short Course grew from a casual conversation among Columbine staff librarians about how to engage older teens and young adults and provide them with the knowledge to make "adult choices" less intimidating.

"There are a lot of 'life lessons' out there that don’t come with instruction books. We would like to help people get those instructions," Explained Columbine Library's teen services librarian, Brian Mosbey, who worked with Emily Crowley, adult services librarian at Columbine to initiate the new program. "We don’t want people to miss the important information in life. This concept has been popular in other libraries and we would like to respond to the wider world; meeting the needs of the community in information and recreation."

Mosbey and Crowley aim to continue this series throughout the year.
