Celebrate Latin American Art, Dance and Culture this Fall

Museo de las Americas presents Sin Fronteras, Sept. 5 - Nov. 30

This fall, art, rhythm and dance have no borders.

From Sept. 5 – Nov. 30, Museo de las Americas, opens a new window transforms the Belmar Library into a collage of culture with their traveling exhibition, Sin Fronteras. The exhibit kicks off with an opening reception, Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 5 -7 p.m.

This celebration of Latin America's traditional dances, songs and cultures showcases a variety of artwork from Mexico, Bolivia and the Caribbean. Making use of unique spaces, the exhibit weaves itself around the Library—some displays even rotate—echoing the themes of movement and freedom captured by the artwork.

“The traveling exhibition seeks to reach out to spaces where people usually gather to perform an activity that is not traditional for a museum, but the space is familiar within the community’s environment,” said Museo de las Americas Executive Director, Claudia Moran. "The public will be able to learn about Latin American cultures through Museo's private art collection, composed of paintings, sculptures, textiles and ceramics."

Visitors learn that Latin American folk dance can be somber yet joyful; a protest or a healing rite; a call to action or an act of love; seeped in tradition, yet ever-evolving; but always, it offers a fascinating and colorful journey into personal expression. Featured pieces include traditional 20th century maracas made of carved wood, Bolivian dance (Diablada) masks, a hoof rattle anklet, photographs of folk dances, oil frescos depicting traditional ceremonies, and other symbolic representations of the theme.

"We are thrilled to provide the Jeffco community with an opportunity to see and experience this vibrant, engaging collection of work at Belmar Library!" says Simone Groene-Nieto, Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator for JCPL. "What a great idea to bring diverse museum collections into public libraries!"
