Back by popular demand, local author Greg Hill will be discussing his new book, The Lonesome Trials of Johnny Rilesat Lakewood Library's Thursday Night Book Group.

About the book: Johnny Riles is in a rough patch. He's lonesome, he's drunk, and someone's murdered his horse. He spends his days searching-for the mysterious killer, for his brother's soul, for a sober reason to live. In this off-kilter tale spun out with dry humor, Johnny delves beneath stark Western landscapes both literal and figurative to unearth the truths behind his nightmares.

Our last visit with this author was a lot of fun and quite memorable for our whole group. Don't miss out!

If you like keeping your hard-earned money, let AARP's certified tax advisors help you with your tax returns this year.

Beginning in February, the Library and AARP will provide free tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand at our Arvada, Belmar, Columbine, Golden, Evergreen, Lakewood and Standley Lake Libraries to help you with tax-related questions through April 15. Space is limited for each session and participants are encouraged to arrive early. Please note: appointments are required at the Evergreen Library. For specific dates and times, select a location below:

Arvada Library

Belmar Library

Columbine Library

Evergreen Library

Golden Library

Lakewood Library

Standley Lake Library

We have a limited selection of printed copies of State and Federal tax forms and instruction books will be available at all JCPL locations while supplies last. To print and order state or federal forms and to find more tax help information, visit our Tax Guide.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. But fear not, dear countrymen, the Library and AARP will again be offering free tax assistance to our patrons.

Happy filing!

We hope you were able to attend our special program featuring renowned author and physical activity specialist, Rae Pica, on October 14. Whether or not you were there, now it's time to put her suggestions into play. Literally!

Rae Pica shared with us how parents, families, teachers, caregivers and childcare providers can help our kids be ready to read by understanding the relationship between physical activity and the brain, the value of play, and how to use movement, play and active learning to nurture a child’s ability to learn to read and think.

To keep things moving, we’re hosting Movin' & Groovin' Fests in the coming weeks. Learn how to make fun movement/play objects from everyday materials. It's a wonderful way to help you baby, toddler and preschool get ready to read.

Bring the kids and join the fun at one of our Movin' & Groovin' Fests. You'll realize why Rae Pica believes, that children "...don't exist only from the neck up. They are thinking, feeling, moving human beings who learn through all their senses."

Unless otherwise noted, Fests are held from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Saturday, October 17: Golden and Lakewood

Saturday, October 24: Arvada and Evergreen

Saturday, November 7: Edgewater (2-4 p.m.), Standley Lake, Columbine

Saturday, November 14: Belmar, Conifer, Wheat Ridge

Marty McFly is back… to the future! Don your puffy vest, hop in your DeLorean and come watch all three Back to the Future movies at the Lakewood location. Travel from 1985 to 1955 to 2015 to 1885, and then some… all in a week’s time.

2 p.m., Saturday, October 17 - Back to the Future: We’ll get in the mood and kick off the trilogy with decorations and trivia.

6 p.m., Wednesday, October 21 - Back to the Future Part II: We’re appropriately showing this movie on the same date that Marty goes into the future! Snap a photo in our “photo booth” and a special app will transform the picture to a futuristic view.

2 p.m., Sunday, October 25 - Back to the Future Part III: Pose in front of a replica of the clock tower from the movie. We’ll add the old time photo effect to make you feel like you’re in 1885.

Everybody loves a tea party! We invite kids who are five and older to bring their favorite grownup to an afternoon tea at the Wheat Ridge Library.

You don’t have to be royalty to enjoy a good tea party. Tea parties can be a fun way to introduce your children to table etiquette. Here are a few tea party “rules” I found in some of our children’s books.

  1. Always try to be clean and neat.
  2. Try to be fancy. A little dress up doesn’t hurt anyone.
  3. Try to eat daintily.
  4. Manners matter.

Whether you’re like Fancy Nancy or more like Tea Rex, tea parties can be a lot of fun. And, here’s a few reading suggestions for you to check out before, or after, your tea party.

4 p.m. Thursday, September 10
Wheat Ridge

Registration is required and is now open. Register.
