With our short growing season, mountain soil, and cool summers, what edibles can we possibly grow in our gardens that will produce? As it turns out, quite a lot! Master gardener Margaret Rode will be leading a lively discussion at the Evergreen Library about seeds and plants that are specially adapted for our conditions, just in time to plan for a great 2017 garden season. AARPAre you deep in the heart of taxes? If you’re confused by the filing process or like keeping your hard-earned money, AARP's certified tax advisors can help you with your tax returns this year.

Beginning in February, JCPL and AARP are providing free tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand on certain dates through April 15 at Arvada, Columbine, Evergreen, Golden, Lakewood and Standley Lake Libraries to help you with your tax-related questions. Space is limited for each session and participants are encouraged to arrive early. Please note: appointments are required at the Evergreen Library.

We also have a limited selection of printed copies of State and Federal tax forms, and instruction books will be available at all library locations while supplies last. To print and order State or Federal forms and to find more tax help information, visit our Tax Guide.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "...nothing is said to be certain, except libraries helping with your taxes." Ok, so that isn't exactly what he said, but it has a ring of truth to it and tax season is here. Fear not, dear countrymen, the Library and AARP are here to help.

Happy filing!

written and published“Great people do things before they're ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you're afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that's what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that's really special and if you're not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself.” - Amy Poehler

So, you have an idea for a book. Now what? Making the decision to write a book is similar to making the decision to start exercising. It takes commitment, real commitment. But guess what? It’s doable, and the rewards can be amazing and so fulfilling.

What better place for inspiration than from the library! Author and Colorado Independent Publishers Association representative Catherine Scott is coming to the Evergreen library to take us on a grand tour from literary idea to finished product. She covers everything from the whys of motivation to marketing your book in a digital world.

If you feel like it’s time for your great novel, short story or children’s book, this is an event you won’t want to miss. It's a real page turner.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami

A New York Times #1 Bestseller, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage is the long-awaited new novel--a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan--from the award-winning, internationally best-selling author Haruki Murakami. Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

In November 2015, Jefferson County residents passed a ballot initiative to increase the Library’s mill levy for the first time in 29 years. Come hear our plans for the future!

Although “watch the birdie” relates to old fashioned photography, we’re talking about friends who light up our skies and trails during this time of the year.

Winter white creates a perfect backdrop to make local birds stand out, so we’re taking a cue from nature and invite you to join Evergreen Audubon and Evergreen Nature Center in celebrating the 19th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Learn more about your flighty neighbors through games, conservation crafts and (of course) bird watching. Who knows, you might catch a glimpse of a Western Scrub Jay, a Killdeer or even a Pine Sisken.

Grab your binoculars and learn about your fine feathered friends of Colorado. Start a new family tradition! You won’t believe how easy it is to become a citizen scientist in your own backyard. We’re kicking off the three-day event by turning birdfeeders and local trails into literal field labs. Register online one week in advance. Limit: 25 participants.

Kickoff event:

1 – 3:30 p.m. Friday, February 12
