Actors say it’s never a good idea to work with children or animals. We couldn’t disagree more.
Meet Nelson the cocker spaniel. Nelson, who normally visits our Arvada Library as part of our PAWS for Reading program, is a lovely, curious pup with curly golden fur. He gently greets his reading friends and calmly listens to their stories. When he hears a particular passage that’s read with emphasis, Nelson perks up and shows marked interest.
Nelson’s handler, Mary is enthusiastic and definitely part of the action. She sits on the floor with kids, listening and discussing the books. Mary has been sharing Nelson with young readers at JCPL for about 1 ½ years. She has been mother to Nelson and his brother, Willie (get it?) since they were only weeks old.
Get to know Nelson:
• Birthday: April 6, 2012
• Lives in: Golden
• Favorite toy: Squeaky balls (he goes through lots of them)
• Favorite food: “Food” (Mary says he eats like a Labrador!)
• Favorite movie: “Lady and the Tramp”
• Pet peeve: Crows – They drive him crazy
In a recent PAWS for Reading session, Nelson enjoyed listening to young Kailey. An avid reader, Kailey is heading into 4th grade next fall. After reading a few books out loud, Kailey watched as Nelson showed off tricks, such as giving high fives, dancing and bowing.
JCPL’s PAWS for Reading program is perfect for any young reader because reading out loud is great practice and our PAWS dogs are adorable and loving. Face it; it’s hard to argue with adorable and loving.
If you know someone who’d like to read with Nelson or any of our other wonderful pups provided through our partnership with Animals 4 Therapy Program, register for your 15-minute session by calling 303-235-5275 or asking our staff for details. It’s a doggone good thing.
