Last week, Denver Zookeeper and giraffe handler Liz was a special guest at the Columbine Library’s story times! When she wasn’t reading this year’s OneBook 4 Colorado selection, Giraffes Can’t Dance, we took a few minutes to ask her about the Denver Zoo’s giraffes and what she thought they might enjoy reading. Based on our chat, our librarians put together a list of books perfect for the Denver Zoo’s giraffe population!
Dikembe and Animal Strike at the Zoo, It’s True! By Karma Wilson
While Dikembe is described as calm and laidback, we think he’d enjoy this tale about a zookeeper trying to manage day-to-day activities at the zoo when the animals decide not to roar, prowl and growl!
Masika and Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain
Masika is the Denver Zoo’s most shy and introverted giraffe, which is why our librarians thought that she could use the self-esteem boost that comes with reading Susan Cain’s book about how important introverts are to the world!
Heshimu and Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein
Friendly and playful Heshimu is bound to get a kick out of reading Interrupting Chicken! It’s been listed on places like Brightly.com and Buzzfeed as one of the funniest children’s books ever written!
Kipele and The Decent Proposal by Kemper Donovan
As the sweetest giraffe at the Denver Zoo, we think that Kipele would love this adorable romance about two strangers who go on one year of dates, one date a week, for half a million dollars each if they can stand each other for the whole time.
