(Lakewood, Colo. - February 27, 2013) The Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) Board of Trustees has approved a resolution put forward by the Colorado Association of Libraries (CAL) to support an appropriation to the State Grants for Libraries Act. If approved by the 2013 Legislature, this appropriation request would restore $5.2 million of state funding, or $1 per capita, for libraries throughout Colorado.
"This funding is sorely needed by libraries throughout the state, including Jefferson County Public Library," said Linda Rockwell, Library Board chair. "Since 2008, JCPL’s revenue has been reduced by $3.8 million, and we have had to reduce services hours, lay off staff and trim our investment in library books and materials. This appropriation could potentially bring in more than $400,000 of new funding for JCPL and enable us to stabilize library services in Jefferson County."
Colorado Library Law (Statute §24-90-401) provides authority for the appropriation of state aid for school, public, and academic libraries; however, there has not been an appropriation since 2003. An appropriation would provide support for all eligible school, public, and academic libraries and help to fulfill the state’s obligation for the delivery of vital library services. JCPL joins a growing number of libraries that have adopted the CAL resolution, including Arapahoe Library District, Denver Public Library Commission, Denver Public Library Friends Foundation, Douglas County Libraries Board of Trustees, High Plains Library District Board of Trustees and Poudre River Public Library District Board of Trustees.
"Libraries provide an important safety net for people who have been hurt by the economic downturn," said Stephen Sweeney, CAL president. "They provide essential services that promote early literacy, education, equal access to technology, economic development and civic and social engagement. It seems to me that $1 per capita is a small price to pay for such an incredible public resource," he added.
